I switched my desktop computer from ethernet to WiFi, and then used its ethernet port to connect it to the switch, and turned on port mirroring to mirror everything to the desktop. I was able to temporarily reallocate one and stick it between my cable modem on the A7 router. These are nice switches that while priced similar to typical unmanaged switches (about $30 for the 8 port model) have some features normally only on managed switches. I determined this by a little temporary home network reconfiguration. That MAC address belongs to the gateway on Comcast's end. So.anyone know what this is? Maybe it's Comcast's DHCP server, and what I'm seeing is my router periodically renewing its IP address lease?ĮDIT: I've figured out what it is.
That suggests that the mystery MAC belongs to something at Comcast's end. The CMTS-MAC matches my mystery MAC in the first 5 bytes. In my Motorola MB7621 cable modem's logs, there are sporadic messages about unicast maintenance ranging, and these include a CMTS-MAC. I actually have found a similar MAC address. Looking up the MAC address on a MAC lookup site, I'm told it belongs to some Cisco equipment.
The MAC address is not the MAC address of the A7's LAN port, WAN port, WiFi, guest WiFi, or the hidden WiFi TP-Link routers use as part of their "OneMesh" mesh network stuff. But that's the IP address of the router (on the LAN and WiFi side). Its MAC address does not match any of my known devices, and its IP address is 192.168.0.1. It's not a lot of traffic.maybe 20 to 50 packets over the course of a couple days, with a few K total. I noticed a device showing up in the traffic statistics that I cannot explain. u/RoweDent created this awesome resource on network theory u/tht1kidd_ has created a suggestion post regarding information everyone needs to provide when asking a question about their network There have been some excellent guides written in this sub, and we're always looking for more!
